HOVERPLANE WITH ELECTRIC MOTORS AND OU GENERATORS
Update January 2007. NOTE NEW EMAIL ADDRESS john.austenbrown@sympatico.ca The sketch above shows a modified Hoverplane which is equipped with much smaller and lighter engines than have been available up to now. The most promising choice would be new technology electric motors.
These engines are supposed to be more efficient and so less fuel payload or batteries are required, the result is that smaller wings and light landing gear can be used. Plus the small diameter of the engine allows quite slim nacelles. .
The sketch of a single seat version is very preliminary and will be updated as the design progresses, however it can already be seen that the new machine would be a considerable advance in the personal aircraft class ie. in cost/performance/safety/utility etc. especially cost, and would have the best control of any flying machine at low airspeeds. A possible power system would be four electric engines with OU type generators for sustaining power, and this is being studied, see link to the work of Myron W. Evans which also includes reference to gravity control (see UFT Papers).
The control system is manual with two autopilots which can merge the hover, translation and cruise flight requirements. The aircraft has been designed however for manual control despite the complexity of the control tasks, it is regarded as essential that the pilot can fly the aircraft safely without satellite or gyroscopic aids just as in any small private aircraft. The loads on the control stick are low by design.
A hoverplane model has completed concept testing in free flight using this control system.
